Dianrong and FnConn have launched Chained Finance, a blockchain lending platform for supply chain companies; according to Soul Htite, founder and CEO of Dianrong, "Chained Finance creates a unique ecosystem that will provide supply chains with easier access to funding at competitive rates."; the companies report the platform could triple financing access for supply chain companies. Ping An is investing 7.77 billion yuan ($1.16 billion) in technology research and development this year with artificial intelligence as the focus; the firm's Ping An Technology division is supporting the efforts; the group has been focusing on solutions for finance and healthcare with plans to expand to other industries; the company's goals are also in line with a government initiative announced by China's State Council; current efforts for Ping An have been centered around recognition software for identity and claims management. The People's Bank of China (PBoC) requires all third-party payment institutions to channel transactions through a newly established central clearing platform called Nets Union Clearing Corp. (Wanglian); the trial operations started in April and will be put to formal use on July 1, 2018; by that time, all third-party payment firms (including Alipay and TenPay), will not be able to conduct transactions, such as bank transfers, outside of regulator's supervision. The Cosun Group has issued notice that it would be defaulting on its high yield debt products equal to $45 million; Cosun raised $166 million through the Ant Financial platform and is now unable to meet obligations on a portion of that amount; this leaves investors asking when they will be repaid; Ant Financial is pressing to ensure repayments are made and has stated they would help pay legal bills if investors decide to sue; the fintech giant does not share the blame as they view themselves as a platform for investors to allocate capital, but they also understand the Ant Financial name carries weight and want to help make sure there is a resolution. Chinese regulators are investigating investment in the cryptocurrency bitcoin as its price is reporting high correlation with the value of the Chinese yuan; according to data from bitcoinity.org, yuan transactions have also accounted for 98% of bitcoin's trading in the past six months; regulators have met with bitcoin exchanges to monitor investment activity; they have also requested that the exchanges do not market the yuan's devaluation as an investment incentive; investors have reported that transaction volumes are limited to a few hundred thousand yuan. Afterpay and Touchcorp are merging to form NewCo which will provide an advanced solution for merchant network installment payments; Afterpay has steadily grown its merchant network which pays a 4% fee for the installment service; Touchcorp will help provide advancements in payments technology for Afterpay and the integrated services will allow for broader expansion. CreditEase Fintech Investment Fund (CEFIF) announced three investments in new fintech companies at LendIt USA 2017; the investments were a series C round in Trumid, an electronic trading platform for the bond market, series B round in WeConvene, an online corporate access management ERP provider for capital markets, and a seed round in WorldCover, an innovative peer-to-peer insurance network; Anju Patwardhan, senior partner of CEFIF, said: "We believe the Chinese fintech market will continue to grow in 2017 and beyond, as many three to five year-old companies have grown into large-scale operations. We expect many of these to mature into high-quality, mid-to-late stage companies." Source
