CB Insights has analyzed 1,098 startups which raised capital from 2008 to 2010; only 46% followed with a second funding round and 14% achieved a fourth round of funding; only 10 companies or 0.91% achieved unicorn status with a valuation of $1 billion and approximately 70% of the startups have failed. 41 fintech artificial intelligence deals occurred in the first quarter of 2017; other top industries for investment in the first quarter included sales and client relationship management and health care; overall, there have been 2,320 total deals from the first quarter of 2012 through the first quarter of 2017 accounting for investment of $15.4 billion. According to a new report by CB Insights global fintech funding reached $5.4bn across 323 deals in Q1 2018; deal activity was highest in the U.S. and Asia, Europe on the other hand fell to a five quarter low; early stage companies in Europe were not receiving investments, though later stage companies were still having success; regtech, wealth management and digital banking led the way, while online lenders lagged behind. Investment funding deals for fintech businesses were lower in 2016, according to data from CB Insights; the firm reports that the number of deals remained steady with a 1% decrease to 836 however the total amount funded decreased by 13% to $12.7 billion in 2016; global instability and industry challenges in P2P lending were among the factors contributing to the lower investment.
